Rob Roberts undertaking ADAS calibration in workshop conditions
Thatcham Research has released a set of new requirements for the safe repair of vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
With 108 fitting and ADAS calibration centres across the UK, National Windscreens was delighted to work alongside the Thatcham steering group, as one of the architects of the new requirements to drive up standards of ADAS calibration across the windscreen fitting industry.
The new mandated requirements are set out in Thatcham’s Insurance Industry Requirements (IIR) paper, published at the end of July. The IIR provides a clear set of instructions to repairers dealing with vehicles fitted with ADAS and establishes the key steps repairers must follow to ensure that ADAS continue to function as they did before any damage occurred.

This document provides a welcomed comprehensive set of requirements to the automotive repair sector, where the calibration of ADAS sensors is required.
“This ensures that safety features on the vehicle are being restored to full functionality, by accredited ADAS calibration technicians. With the increasing numbers of vehicles with safety systems coming as standard, the safety of the driver and their occupants along with other road users is paramount. The robust IIR gives confidence in the continuation of ADAS calibrations to the highest standard in the automotive repair sector.
National Windscreens works closely with Hella Gutmann (HGS), who supply ADAS calibration equipment to the 108 UK fitting centres. Neil Hilton, head of HGS, said: “Following the rapid increase in vehicle ADAS fitment it is paramount that the automotive industry has a unilateral approach to the repair and calibration of these vehicles. As pioneers of aftermarket ADAS calibration equipment and a long-standing relationship working with Thatcham Research in this area, it is great news that we finally have the IIR to facilitate safe and accurate working practices on ADAS vehicles.”
To meet stringent safety measures and attain 5-star Euro NCAP ratings, new vehicles will carry at least two ADAS features, such as autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist or cruise control with speed limiter. The new IIR is designed to ensure these systems are repaired to manufacturer standards, ensuring vehicles go back to the roads in as safe a condition as possible.
